Charming Billy! And darling big sister Carolyn, too!

William Ryan was born on July 5. Isn’t he a cutie pie? I just love his little baby side-burns, not to mention those adorable bow-shaped lips. And he even gave me a sweet little smile. Anyone who tells you that babies don’t smile is completely wrong in my humble opinion.

Baby Billy was welcomed not just by mom and dad, but by big sister Carolyn, too. Photographing young siblings is among my favorite things. Behind the scenes, convincing a new big brother or sister to participate in a portrait session when their little lives are amid such big change isn’t necessarily easy (although in this specific case, Carolyn was wonderful and easy with her baby brother!). But even when we have to work for it, capturing the new relationship between brothers and sisters is so profoundly lovely. These photos always make me happy. Hope that you enjoy them, too.

Bursting with personality: Welcome, baby Aayden!

Aayden Mateo joined the world on August 22, and was born with a full head of hair and (I think) a full personality, too. Most newborns are dreamy and still a little other-worldly, if you know what I mean. Aayden came for his photos and wanted to look me right in the eye. Smiles and almost laughter right from birth. Adorable, huh? This gorgeous little guy is already a charmer! Aayden was the August winner of my baby contest, so special thanks to all of the friends and family who voted for Joanne and helped them win. Aayden, I think you’re going to be a perfect fit with the enthusiastic team behind you. Welcome!

It’s been a while since I’ve updated the blog. Let me assure you, it hasn’t been the absence of lovely clients. But we’ve been battened down to the bare essentials through a move of houses, new home studio, send off to Kindergarten, family wedding, and more. So, with fall upon me, back to business and back to the blog. I’ve got some beautiful babies to show you in the next few posts!

So we’re starting off with a gorgeous little man, baby Grayson. Isn’t he a perfect little gerber baby kind of boy?! Not only is Grayson super-duper cute, he is joining just the sweetest family you could ever hope to meet. Welcome to the world, Grayson! I’m so pleased to be among the first to meet you, darling!

My favorite baby of the year: Introducing Luke Ryan (with big sis Mia!)

Here he is! Yes, my favorite baby of the year. Born to our dearest friends, Katie and Jason. Luke Ryan joins big sister Mia, who is just as proud and sweet as can be.

The much-anticipated arrival of Emily… welcome to Dot, little lovely!

Dashing little Noah is a classmate of my own dear daughter Ryah. This spring, each day when I would come to drop off or pick up at childcare, Noah was sure to give me a report about the pending arrival of his baby sister. Or if he didn’t, another of their classmates surely did. Emily was a much-anticipated little girl!

There may have been the slightest bit of disappointment when she at last appeared. Noah and the class had a different name picked out for Emily Claire. But I do believe her parents made the right choice. As you’ll see from Noah’s face, any hint of dissatisfaction couldn’t have lasted for long. This is the smile of one proud, gentle, helpful, and loving big brother!

And as for Emily, isn’t she just so pretty? Emily Claire, I am so happy to welcome you to the Dorchester neighborhood and look forward to watching you grow!

Bitty baby, big smile: Meet Cole!

Cole was the winner of the Nine Months of Newborns contest for the month of March. He had other plans, however, and actually arrived during February! Fortunately we always draw a little early for just that reason…

Although Cole was an itty-bitty peanut on the day of his photo session, he already had a giant smile that could melt any heart. Never believe anyone who says newborns don’t smile–I am convinced that they absolutely do, especially when they dream. Too bad we can never know the stuff their happy baby dream are made of; Cole certainly had something blissful on his mind the morning I met him. Welcome to the world and to Dorchester, baby Cole. It was a pleasure to meet you and your parents!

Baby Eva was born in between snowstorms last month, and I got to photograph her when she was only five days old. This little starlet loves the camera. She’s got a stylish head of curls, she waved to me, and even blew a kiss. What a showstopper! I think being photogenic runs in the family. Big brother Noah loved to pose and then come see on the back of my camera how he did. Pretty great, right? The family moved into their new neighborhood very recently, so we took advantage of great light (and undecorated walls) in their dining room to capture some simple, tender, timeless images of their growing family. You can just see how much the whole family treasures their little girl, can’t you? Welcome to the world, baby Eva! So loved that you’re already lovin’ us back. A beautiful baby, indeed.

Baby Marlowe: A New Arrival in Jamaica Plain

Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of photographing the lovely Marlowe. She, and her family, are new to Jamaica Plain–just transplanted from Austin in time for her arrival. Our weather hasn’t been very kind to them during the transition, but Baby Marlowe didn’t seem to mind. She just snuggled right in, as sweet and cozy as you please. I was in love with the cute little dimples on the backs of her hands and the pretty little wrinkles in her feet. Ahhh, babies!

Mommy tells me that Marlowe is already a daddy’s girl. Check out the final image in the series, and I think it’s pretty clearly true. Although she’s just learning how to focus, she certainly has eyes for him! Big brother Finn (don’t these kiddos have the greatest names?!) is eighteen months old, so just a little guy himself. Already, he is so good at being gentle and kind to his new baby sister. Welcome to Boston, Baby Marlowe. I hope you and your family will be feeling right at home soon. We’re glad to have you!

Welcome, Kinsey! Dorchester’s newest baby beauty!

1.11.11–a great day to make your first appearance in the world, huh?! Well, the exquisite baby Kinsey certainly deserves her #1 status–doesn’t she have the most gorgeous features?! And she did a wonderful job on her portrait session, too. Big brother Sam joined us for a few–and is also quite attracted to baby sister’s features. He (in the sweetest possible manner) really wanted to poke her eyes (yes, no need to wonder how second-born children acquire their easy-going, resilient personalities).

When she’s big enough, Kinsey is going to be a child-care classmate of my little guy Elliot, so I’m excited that I’ll get to watch this little beauty as she grows. Kinsey, welcome to the world. I think you and Elliot are going to be great friends! Thanks for being my first “nine months of newborns” winner. I hope they’re all as wonderful as you!

Vancouver Baby Workshop: Darling Newborn Portraits!

I love babies… big babies, little babies, chunky babies, bald babies, and perhaps best of all, NEWBORN BABIES! Such a beautiful stage of life–sweet, snuggly, and over in a flash (thankfully, as not many parents could survive if the awake-to-feed-every-two-hours phase lasted longer). Being invited by a family to share in these precious moments is one of my favorite parts of my job.

Honing my skills in working with these tiny little people is one of my big goals for 2011. And to start off right, I decided to ask a master for guidance. Photographer Jillian Kirby is Vancouver, British Columbia’s premier baby photographer. She works exclusively with pregnant women and babies in their first year of life. And the beauty of her images tells you exactly why–she’s found a true calling! What an honor for me to be the very first (and surely not the last) photographer she is mentoring. We were joined by Rachel Ludwig, a wonderfully talented portrait photographer, also based in British Columbia.

What a day! Jillian shared her best secrets for calming, soothing, posing, and capturing the first days of babies’ lives. Here are a few of the images she guided me to make. I can’t wait to take off the training wheels and put all of my new knowledge into practice on my own. Fortunately, several new babies are ahead for me–thanks to the Nine Months of Newborns contest. January and February winners have been selected, but families expecting in the months ahead are still encouraged to enter to win one of the eight remaining $500 portrait packages!
